It is important that your imaging software is tightly integrated with your DPMS (such as Software of Excellence EXact, Kodak R4, Arthur, Dentsys Paragon, Assisortho DO_IT, etc). The software and database should be set up to allow for integration of patient records, for convenient and consistent access. Furthermore, the database should be accessible from all workstations, so that you can access the patient images from any workstation on the network, not just the surgery. Dentists may want to write a referral letter, for example, and access to images from anywhere on the network helps with this process.

It is vital that the image database is backed up as rigorously as your DPMS software. Not only do you have a legal obligation to do this for data protection reasons, but it may be extremely damaging to your business and reputation to lose important patient x-rays and images.
